Review: SPB Weather

What if you could have an up-to-date weather forecast in your mobile phone so that you could check what the weather is like back at home or what it's like in 3 days in the city where you are going to? What if you could get

“detailed everyday forecasts for over 10,000 cities worldwide from several weather sources with the beauty and friendliness of up-to-date satellite images on a 3D Globe”.

This is what SPB Weather promises and we wanted to find out whether this is really what you get.

The app does look good. It offers eye-candy interface with rich icons and plenty of information. If you are travelling, there are over 10,000 cities listed in the app from which you can choose one that is nearest to you. And the good thing is that you can save up to 10 favourite cities.

It’s a bit difficult to roll down the list so the easiest thing to do is to type in the name of your city.

It is quite surprising how many cities the app recognises, especially when it comes to small Finnish cities that most people in the world have never heard of. We tested the app with a medium sized Finnish city called Tampere.

As said earlier, there’s plenty of information available. You can get a 5-day-forecast, check today’s temperatures, get exact information about the humidity, pressure and wind. There's also a refresh button for the ones who really want to get the latest temperature.

The app is very international as you can change units (metrics / english system). The change can be seen in the temperature (celsius or fahrenheit) and in wind speed . In addition to the more or less normal weather forecast features, SPB Weather also contains a 3D satellite image of the globe.

In the globe, you can see your favourite cities, where it's raining, where it's cloudy, where it's warm and where it's cold (done by colour-coding).

You can zoom in and zoom out and check again, for example, the cloud situation in Russia or where it’s raining in Europe. However, if you zoom in too much, the image naturally suffers and is not very accurate.

All in all, SPB Weather app is very convenient especially for international people who are travelling constantly. Although the 3D globe looks cool, it's questionable whether it is very useful. Nevertheless, SPB Weather provides plenty of information regarding weather conditions all over the world.

although spb weather works well, the interface is dated, icons are past its best. they charge a bomb too, Nokia should provide free weather along with maps and make these dinosaur obsolete. either that or spb should improve.

Have to say I am getting a little disappointed in SPB as their update program for their Symbian apps seem a little slow. Ok they have just released the new (useful??) time application back in March, but their old favourites are looking pretty crusty now.

SPB Weather - Last release was 24/12/2009 and there has still not been an official update for Symbian^3. When installed on such a device the following issues are noted. a) GPS location based weather does not work. b) Cannot set schedule update to once per day. c) Homescreen widget has no background option and as such gets lost on busy wallpapers unlike other widgets.

Considering the price that SPB charge for their products, when compared to other similar applications it is a shame that they are not supporting these applications to a level that warrants the additional expense.....such a shame.
