Nokia's Market Share in Smartphones is Growing

Nokia announced today the fourth quarter financial results and reported an operating profit of EUR 1.141 billion, with net sales EUR 12 billion. What is interesting from smartphone users' point of view is the fact that Nokia released double the amount of touchscreen devices in this last quarter than the previous period, thus increasing its smartphone marketshare from 35% to 40%. Among the top performers were the M97 Mini, 5800 and 5530. In case you are interested in all the numbers and results from Q4 2009 you can read them from here. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia CEO, was pleased with the result:

"We grew our market share in smartphones in the fourth quarter, driven by the successful launch of new touch and QWERTY models. Our performance in smartphones, combined with continuing success in the emerging markets, helped us increase sales in our Devices & Services unit, both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year. Our solid results also owe a good deal to world class supply chain management and impressive sales execution...

Our focus remains firmly on execution, especially around user experience. Here I want to highlight our move to shake up the navigation market with free walk and drive navigation on our smartphones, a good example of how we are leveraging our assets to bring real benefits to consumers."

What do you think about Nokia's results and the fact that its smartphone market share rose 5%?

Free Ovi Maps Now Officially Available for Nokia N97

Last week we told you how you could install the free Ovi Maps service to your Nokia N97 already before the official launching. In case you missed that or didn't succeed in installing the service, this is your chance as Nokia released today the Ovi Maps navigation software for Nokia N97.

Notice that this new version of Ovi Maps requires the latest available firmware so you need to have   installed phone software version 2.0.x on your N97. To get the software and free navigation just run the built-in software update client which is located inside the Applications Folder and choose the new Ovi Maps from the list (picture). In case you still didn't get the latest firmware you can update your device through Nokia Software Updater.

New Innovation - Mobile Radar

Nokia Research Center (NRC) unveiled a new research concept called Mobile Radar today. With Mobile Radar, you can measure an object’s distance, speed, and direction by using a mobile device. Simply put, one day you can hopefully use your mobile phone as a radar.

In the following video, you’ll see researcher Jani Ollikainen use his hand to adjust the music player’s volume, without ever touching the hardware. In the second demo, you’ll see fellow researchers Terhi Rautiainen and Risto Kaunisto measure the distance, speed, and direction of a human walking. The possibilities are endless with this technology, what other uses can you think of for it?
